The Physiotherapy Service at the NRH strives to deliver best clinical practice and standards of care based on national and international practice in rehabilitation. Physiotherapy services are provided across Interdisciplinary Teams to provide a better patient experience and to maximise patient outcomes.

Specialist Physiotherapy Rehabilitation is delivered by expert staff to the core clinical programmes:

    • Brain Injury and Stroke Specialty Programmes including Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness (PDOC)
    • Spinal Cord System of Care including patients requiring ventilation
    • Prosthetic Orthotic and Limb Absence Rehabilitation (POLAR) Programme including Day Patients
    • Paediatric Family Centred Rehabilitation

The Physiotherapy Service also provides specialist treatment across all Programmes and adjunct services, engaging with interdisciplinary teams, including:

    • Respiratory Physiotherapy
    • Aquatic Physiotherapy
    • Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy
    • Outpatient Physiotherapy
    • Recreational Therapy
    • Wheelchair and Seating Service
    • Splinting Service
    • Patient and Non-Patient Handling Co-ordinator
    • Clinical Practice Tutor

Your Physiotherapist will develop a specific programme for you which will aim to:

    • Improve your flexibility, strength and tolerance for exercise.
    • Teach and help you to practice skills and techniques to maximise your practical ability and independence.
    • Improve your mobility, and assess for and recommend suitable equipment.
    • Treat and manage pain.
    • Refer you to other physiotherapy services such as Sports and Exercise or Aquatic Physiotherapy.

If a Respiratory Physiotherapist is involved in your care, this may involve:

    • Monitoring the health of your lungs.
    • Providing treatments to keep your lungs clear.
    • Assessing the need for respiratory equipment.
    • Liaising closely with the other members of your Rehabilitation Team
