Assessment of Perceived Stress amongst Nursing Staff in a Rehabilitation Hospital

Identification of Stressors in Nurses in a Rehabilitation Hospital

Rose Curtis

This project attempts to identify sources of occupational stress to nurses in a rehabilitation hospital.

Data was gathered from registered general nurses in a rehabilitation hospital using a questionnaire modified from the Work Positive Programme questionnaire from the Health and Safety Authority. It used a combination of open ended and scale response questions.

The report concludes that the main stressors identified in nurses in a rehabilitation hospital are similar to those identified in nurses in other specialities up to twenty-five years ago which include, staffing levels, workload, staff conflict, communication, organisations support and shift work. Cultural and communication differences between multi-national nurses in Ireland are identified as a source of stress not previously specified.

Final Report presented to the NRH Ethics Committee –  October 2006
