November 2026 Lecture
Title:
“UNBROKEN – Scaling Rehabilitation in Wartime: Meeting Urgent and Long-Term Needs”
Presented by:
- Dr Oleh Bilianskyi, Head of National Rehabilitation Center UNBROKEN in Lviv, Ukraine, and Associate Professor at the Department of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy – Ukrainian Catholic University
Date: Wednesday 11th November, 2026
Time: 1.00pm – 2.00pm
Dr Oleh Bilianskyi will provide an overview of the work carried out and services provided in the vital UNBROKEN National Rehabilitation Center, in Lviv, Ukraine.
UNBROKEN works as a part of the First Lviv Medical Union — the largest medical institution in Ukraine, which includes two adult hospitals and one children’s hospital. Every patient is supported by a multidisciplinary team that focuses on each person’s individual goals and needs.
The Center’s areas of focus include reconstructive surgery, orthopaedics, and prosthetics. People not only receive prostheses there — they are manufactured on-site.
The Center admits the most complex cases of spinal cord injuries, which in military personnel are often combined with traumatic brain injuries, amputations, or multiple shrapnel wounds to the musculoskeletal system and internal organs.
The spinal injury unit is equipped with the latest technology to ensure highly effective comprehensive rehabilitation.
UNBROKEN specialists are actively developing in the field of multisensory rehabilitation and enhancing the approach to treating patients with traumatic brain injuries.
Two additional important areas of recovery and adaptation include rehabilitation for the blind and hydro-kinesiotherapy.
Hydro-kinesiotherapy refers to physical exercises in a water environment. It is an effective method of rehabilitation for patients with severe injuries and amputations.
To ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to recovery, other medical specialists are involved when needed. UNBROKEN also actively uses telemedicine, which allows patients — for example, after limb amputation — to consult several specialists simultaneously.
During their recovery, patients can live together with their families in specially equipped social housing, designed to meet the needs of severely injured defenders and to help them adapt to life after trauma.
