Train the Trainer in Neurogenic Bowel Management (2 days): This programme provides training in the theoretical and practical skills to support the planning, implementation and evaluation to facilitate a course in neurogenic bowel dysfunction. This will support the trainer to facilitate a course for registered nurses or Health Care Assistants HCA’s in the individual’s clinical area. The workshop will include the key points in designing a course, writing aims and objectives, teaching methods, learning styles.

Pre-requirements: Must have attended a one day neurogenic bowel course, completed assessment, be deemed competent and be prepared to deliver and support training locally.

Day 1: Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCEs) is a form of performance-based testing used to measure candidates’ clinical competence.  In this session we will use manikins and identify different neurogenic bowel issues.

Day 2: Each individual candidate will be required to prepare and present a short presentation on the neurogenic bowel and be evaluated by their peers.

Delegates: Suitable for all registered nurses in both hospital community setting who are competent in bowel care and prepared to train candidates locally

Accreditation:  13CEU’s from Nursing and Midwifery Board Ireland (NMBI)

Neurogenic Bladder Management (1 day): This programme provides training in the theoretical and practical skills in the management of neurogenic bladder dysfunction. This will include a workshop on clinical aspects of performing urethral, suprapubic, and intermittent catheterisation for male and female patients. The training will also include a session on complications / troubleshooting issues in relation to neurogenic bladder management. Assessment of clinical competency to be achieved locally.

Neurogenic Bowel Management (1 day):  This programme provides training in the theoretical and practical skills to support the planning, implementation and evaluation of a neurogenic bowel care programme.  This will include a workshop on the clinical aspects of performing digital rectal examination (DRE), insertion of a suppository, digital rectal stimulation (DRS), and digital removal of faeces (DRF). The training will also include a session on complications, adjunctive interventions, colostomy and trans- anal irrigation (TAI) in relation to neurogenic bowel dysfunction.

Assessment of clinical competency to be achieved locally.

‘Skills Update’ for Health Care Assistants: This course is to enhance the knowledge and skills by providing continuing education for Health Care Assistants (HCA). It is delivered using evidence based practice to support quality patient care within their health care setting. The workshop is delivered with interactive learning sessions allowing participants to be involved in the learning process to progress their theoretical and clinical skills. Topics include continence issues for neurogenic bladder/ bowel, skin integrity, sexuality and disability, communication.
