Looking Forward: Specialist Rehabilitation Services in Ireland

How should these services be developed and delivered?

Held on Friday 21st October 2011, Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

Rehabilitation services in Ireland have historically been underdeveloped – now as we find ourselves with less money and bigger challenges than ever, we must ask how we can best manage and provide services for those most vulnerable in our community. Debates about rehabilitation often ask ‘where rehabilitation services should be provided – in hospital or in the Community?’ Clearly this is the wrong question – clients have different needs at different times along the continuum of care. The focus of this conference was to discuss:-

How do we make best use of available resources and provide quality, efficient, cost effective rehabilitation services?

How do we ensure that clients can access the services that are appropriate for their individual needs in a timely and effective manner?

How can we focus expertise and harness energy in planning and developing services within the context of wider health service developments?

Syndicate Sessions will focus on sharing experience and expertise between healthcare professionals towards the ongoing development of rehabilitation services in the context of best practice, continuum of care and durability of outcomes.

NRH – Delivering and Developing Specialist Medical Rehabilitation since 1961

President Mary McAleese formally launched the National Rehabilitation Hospital’s 50th Anniversary Year on 2nd February 2011. At the launch, President McAleese said she believed that the vision of a new NRH would be realised because of the extraordinary fidelity of its founders, the Sisters or Mercy and its board, management and staff. President McAleese also said the hospital “accompanies patients and their families so closely through the most testing of emotional tempests as they adapt to what is for many a significant change in how they experience their lives”.

In the past 50 years, the hospital has cared for over 36,500 Inpatients and has reviewed over 250,000 patients in our Outpatient Service.

When it opened in 1961, the NRH (then known as Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, and subsequently as the National Medical Rehabilitation Centre) was – and still is - a unique self-contained rehabilitation unit, the only hospital of its kind in Ireland.

A programme of events to celebrate the year has been organised and current and former patients and staff will be key participants in these events.
