National Rehabilitation Hospital

Moving into our New World Class Rehabilitation Facility

We are preparing for the move into the new NRH in June 2020

We are moving into our new World Class Rehabilitation Facility in June 2020

We are delighted to confirm that all patients will be moving into our long-awaited new world class rehabilitation hospital, which is located next to the current hospital in June.

It is the first hospital of its kind to be built in Ireland. The design is patient-centred and based on the principles of empowerment, dignity, privacy, confidentiality and choice.

The new hospital has spacious single ensuite rooms and treatment spaces that allow for some therapies to be delivered within each Unit. This means that patients may not need to travel to therapy departments for all of their treatments.

The new hospital is designed to enhance patients’ experience and contribute towards getting the best outcome from their Rehabilitation Programme. The new building links into the clinical and support services that will remain in the existing hospital (Cedars building) until Phase Two of the New Hospital Project is completed.

What will happen before the Move

Any items to be moved across from wards to the new Units will be done in advance of patients moving.  Ward teams will assist patients with this.

Each patient will be assigned their new room number in advance.  Staff and patients on current wards will remain the same in the new Units in most cases.

The Day of the Move

The move is being led on both days by June Stanley, Deputy CEO, assisted by Stephen Barrett, Project Administrator.

Programme Managers and Assistant Directors of Nursing will co-ordinate Teams of Staff assigned to each ward. Teams will work in relay as follows:-

 – Sending staff will help patients prepare and get their belongings ready to move

Transitioning staff will take patients from the ward across to their new room

Receiving staff will welcome patients into the new hospital and help them get settled into their new space

In addition, staff from all areas across the hospital and NRH volunteers have offered their time to support and assist patients and the moving teams.

Inpatient therapy services may be interrupted on moving day to allow all staff to focus on ensuring that the move takes place safely and effectively.

After the Move

There will be flexibility around treatment schedules for the first few days after the move to allow patients to settle in to their new Units.

Catering Services

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all meals are currently being served in patients’ rooms.

All meals are freshly prepared in the hospital kitchen each day. Patients will be given a choice of foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals will be served between the times listed below:

Breakfast –        7.15am – 8.15am

Lunch –             12.30pm – 1.30pm

Evening Tea –    5.00pm – 6.00pm

We welcome all feedback as we become familiar with news ways of working and delivering rehabilitation services in our new hospital.

We thank our patients in advance for your cooperation during the move.  We sincerely hope that you will enjoy the new state-of-the-art facilities and environment and we extend our very best wishes to you for the remainder of your rehabilitation programme and beyond.
